What is my zodiac sign?

How zodiac signs are determined
Your zodiac sign — your sun sign — comes from the position of the Sun on the day you were born. As the Earth orbits the Sun over the course of a year, the Sun appears to move through 12 constellations along the ecliptic. Each constellation corresponds to a zodiac sign, and each sign occupies roughly 30 degrees of the 360-degree zodiac wheel.
The dates for each sign are based on the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons rather than the constellations themselves. The first sign, Aries, begins at the spring equinox around March 21. The rest follow in order through the year, ending with Pisces in mid-March. These dates shift by a day in some years because of how the calendar handles leap years, but the ranges above cover the standard boundaries.
Your sun sign describes your core identity: the qualities you develop over a lifetime, how you express yourself consciously, and what gives you a sense of purpose. It is the most well-known part of astrology, but it is only one piece. Your Moon sign and Rising sign add layers that a sun sign alone cannot capture.
The four elements
Each zodiac sign belongs to one of four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, or Water. The element tells you something fundamental about how a sign operates in the world. Signs that share an element understand each other intuitively, even when their personalities are different on the surface.
Fire — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Action-oriented, energetic, and instinctive. Fire signs move on impulse and bring warmth and enthusiasm wherever they go.
Earth — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Practical, grounded, and reliable. Earth signs build things that last and take the physical world seriously.
Air — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Intellectual, social, and idea-driven. Air signs process the world through thought, communication, and connection.
Water — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Emotional, intuitive, and deep. Water signs navigate by feeling and pick up on undercurrents other people miss entirely.
The three modalities
Besides elements, each sign has a modality: Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable. The modality describes how a sign engages with change. Cardinal signs start things. Fixed signs sustain things. Mutable signs adapt and transition.
Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are initiators. They mark the beginning of each season and carry that starting energy into everything they do. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) are the middle of each season — stable, determined, and resistant to change. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) close out each season, bringing flexibility and the ability to shift direction.
Knowing your element and modality together gives you a more precise picture than the sign name alone. Aries is cardinal fire: the spark that starts the blaze. Leo is fixed fire: the bonfire that sustains itself. Sagittarius is mutable fire: the wildfire that spreads in every direction.
Sun sign vs. full birth chart
Your sun sign is the most accessible entry point into astrology, and it carries real weight. But it is one placement in a chart that contains dozens. Two people with the same sun sign can be dramatically different if their Moon signs, Rising signs, and planetary placements tell different stories.
Your Moon sign governs your emotional wiring — how you process feelings, what makes you feel safe, and how you react under stress. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) shapes your outward personality and first impressions. Together with your Sun, these three form your “Big Three” — the core trio that most astrologers look at first.
If you want to go beyond your sun sign, a full birth chart maps every planet in the sky at the moment you were born. It requires your birth time and location in addition to your date, but the level of detail is incomparable.

Frequently Asked Questions
What determines your zodiac sign?
Your zodiac sign, also called your sun sign, is determined by the position of the Sun at the time of your birth. The Sun moves through each of the 12 zodiac signs over the course of a year, spending roughly 30 days in each one. The sign the Sun occupied on your birthday is your zodiac sign. You only need your birth month and day to find it.
What are cusp dates and do they change your sign?
Cusp dates are the days when the Sun transitions from one zodiac sign to the next. If your birthday falls within a day or two of a sign boundary, you are born on the cusp. Astrologically, you still have one sun sign — the Sun is either in one sign or the other. But people born on cusps sometimes identify with traits of both neighboring signs. If your birthday is right on the boundary, a birth chart calculated with your exact birth time will tell you definitively which sign your Sun is in.
What is the difference between a zodiac sign and a birth chart?
Your zodiac sign is just your Sun sign — one placement out of many. A full birth chart maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, and all planets at the exact moment and location of your birth. It includes your Rising sign (Ascendant), Moon sign, Mercury sign, Venus sign, Mars sign, and more. Your sun sign is the starting point, but a birth chart gives you the complete picture.
Does time of birth matter for your zodiac sign?
For your sun sign, time of birth usually doesn't matter. The Sun changes signs roughly once a month, so your birth date alone is enough. The exception is if you were born on the exact day the Sun changes signs — in that case, your birth time determines which side of the boundary you fall on. Time of birth matters much more for your Moon sign and Rising sign, both of which change more frequently.
What are the 12 zodiac signs and their dates?
The 12 zodiac signs and their approximate dates are: Aries (March 21 – April 19), Taurus (April 20 – May 20), Gemini (May 21 – June 20), Cancer (June 21 – July 22), Leo (July 23 – August 22), Virgo (August 23 – September 22), Libra (September 23 – October 22), Scorpio (October 23 – November 21), Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21), Capricorn (December 22 – January 19), Aquarius (January 20 – February 18), and Pisces (February 19 – March 20).
