Understanding Your Birth Chart
A natal chart (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It shows which zodiac sign each planet occupied and, if your birth time is known, which house of your chart it fell in. This combination of sign, planet, and house creates a unique personality fingerprint.
The most commonly referenced placements are the Big Three: Sun (core identity), Moon (emotional nature), and Ascendant/Rising (outward persona). But the full chart includes Mercury (communication), Venus (love and values), Mars (drive and conflict), Jupiter (expansion and luck), Saturn (structure and limitation), and the outer planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (generational themes with personal expression through house placement).
Retrograde planets (marked with an R in your chart) appear to move backward from Earth's perspective. In astrological interpretation, retrograde planets express their energy in a more internalized, reflective, or unconventional way. They are not negative; they represent a different mode of expression.
A natal chart is one lens on your personality, useful but incomplete on its own. When the patterns in your chart are corroborated by an entirely independent system like BaZi or numerology, the result is far more reliable than any single system alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my birth time?
Your birth time is optional but improves accuracy. Without it, your Sun sign, Mercury through Pluto, and North Node positions are still accurate. The Moon position may be off by up to 6 degrees (potentially a different sign), and the Ascendant (Rising sign) and house placements cannot be calculated. If you know your birth time, include it for a complete chart.
Do I need my birth location?
Birth location is optional. If provided, it enables precise calculation of house cusps and the Ascendant through our geocoding system. Without it, you still get all planetary sign and degree positions; the chart simply cannot determine houses or the Rising sign.
How accurate are the calculations?
Planetary positions are calculated using the Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical engine used by professional astrology software. Positions are accurate to within fractions of a degree for any birth date from the 20th century onward.
What is the Big Three (Sun, Moon, Rising)?
The Big Three are the most influential placements in your chart. Your Sun sign represents your core identity and ego. Your Moon sign reveals your emotional nature and instinctive reactions. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) is how others perceive you and the lens through which you approach the world. Together they form the foundation of your astrological personality.
How does a birth chart compare to BaZi or numerology?
Western natal charts map planetary positions at birth against the zodiac. BaZi maps the Chinese calendar energies. Numerology reduces birth data to core numbers. These are completely independent systems with different origins, logic, and interpretive frameworks. When they converge, pointing to the same personality trait independently, it creates a notably strong signal.
Is this a free birth chart calculator with no sign-up?
Yes. Sagelon's birth chart calculator is free with no email or account required. Enter your birth date (and optionally time and location) to get your full natal chart with all planetary positions, signs, and degrees. Swiss Ephemeris precision.
What astrology engine does Sagelon use?
Sagelon uses the Swiss Ephemeris with the Placidus house system. The Swiss Ephemeris is the same astronomical calculation engine used by professional astrology software. Planetary positions are accurate to arc-seconds for any modern birth date.
Can I see my birth chart with numerology and tarot together?
Yes. Enter your birth details once on Sagelon's free Convergence Snapshot at sagelon.com/snapshot. It runs your Western natal chart, BaZi Four Pillars, numerology numbers, and tarot birth cards together and shows where the systems agree about your personality.
What house system does Sagelon use?
Sagelon uses the Placidus house system, the most widely used house system in Western astrology. It divides the ecliptic based on the time it takes for each degree to rise from the IC to the Ascendant, resulting in unequal house sizes that vary by latitude.
