What Is a Birth Chart?

A natal chart is a two-dimensional map of the solar system as seen from your exact birth location at your exact birth time. It shows where each planet was positioned in the zodiac and in which house it fell. No two birth charts are exactly alike because the chart changes significantly with every minute that passes, especially for fast-moving points like the Ascendant and Moon.

What You Need

1. Birth date: the month, day, and year you were born.
2. Exact birth time, ideally to the minute. Check your birth certificate or hospital records. TheRising sign changes every ~2 hours, so even a rough estimate helps.
3. Birth location: the city (or closest city) where you were born. This determines the local horizon, which sets your house placements.

How It Works

Birth chart calculation follows a precise sequence. First, ephemeris data (astronomical tables of planetary positions) determines the ecliptic longitude of each planet at your birth moment. These longitudes are mapped onto the 360-degree zodiac wheel, placing each planet in a specific sign and degree. Finally, the house system overlays 12 life-area divisions based on your birth time and location, anchored by the Ascendant (Rising sign) on the eastern horizon.

The Big Three

The three most important placements in any birth chart are the Sun, Moon, and Rising sign, collectively called the Big Three. The Sun represents your core identity and conscious ego. The Moon governs your emotional nature and inner world. The Rising sign (Ascendant) shapes your outward personality and first impressions. These three points alone give a remarkably accurate personality sketch.

Key Components

• Planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Each represents a different drive or faculty.
• Signs: the 12 zodiac signs (from Aries to Pisces) describe how each planet expresses its energy.
• Houses: the 12 houses represent areas of life where that energy manifests (career, home, relationships, and so on).
• Aspects: angular relationships between planets (conjunctions, squares, trines, etc.) that show how different parts of your personality interact.

Why Birth Time Matters

The Rising sign changes approximately every two hours as the Earth rotates. Since the Rising sign determines your entire house system, an inaccurate birth time can shift planets into different houses, changing the interpretation significantly. The Moon also moves quickly (about 13 degrees per day), so a few hours can sometimes place it in a different sign entirely.

Common Mistakes

• Wrong time zone. Make sure you are using the time zone of the birth location, not your current location.
• Daylight Saving Time errors. DST rules have changed many times throughout history. Verify whether DST was in effect at your birth location on your birth date.
• Rounded birth time. Hospital staff sometimes round to the nearest quarter-hour. Even a 15-minute difference can affect your Rising sign and house cusps.
• Using only Sun sign. Your Sun sign is one placement out of dozens. A full birth chart provides dramatically more insight.
