Consonants form the structure and outer expression (and are used to calculate the Personality number), while vowels reveal the inner essence. This is why the Soul Urge uses only A, E, I, O, U (and sometimes Y). They represent the hidden interior of your name's vibration.
The Vowel Values
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Write out your full birth name (first, middle, and last) as it appears on your birth certificate.
- Identify every vowel (A, E, I, O, U) in each name. Handle Y on a case-by-case basis.
- Assign each vowel its number using the values above.
- Add the vowel values for each name and reduce each to a single digit (or master number).
- Add the reduced totals and reduce to a final single digit (or master number). That is your Soul Urge.
Worked Example: SARAH ELIZABETH JONES
SARAH: vowels A(1) + A(1) = 2
ELIZABETH: vowels E(5) + I(9) + A(1) + E(5) = 20 → 2 + 0 = 2
JONES: vowels O(6) + E(5) = 11 → master number, keep as 11
Total: 2 + 2 + 11 = 15 → 1 + 5 = 6

The Y Question
Y is the one letter that can function as either a vowel or a consonant, and it changes the calculation. Our calculator counts Y as a vowel when its name has no other vowel, or when neither letter next to it is a vowel. In "Lynn," Y is the vowel because the name has no other vowel. In "Yolanda," Y is a consonant because the O sits next to it. In "Emily," the final Y is a vowel because the L before it is a consonant. Some numerologists go by sound instead, so names like Ryan can come out differently by hand.
