Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number from 1 to 9 in the Pythagorean system:
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Write out your full birth name (first, middle, and last) as shown on your birth certificate.
- Convert each letter to its number using the Pythagorean chart above.
- Add the numbers for each name separately and reduce each to a single digit (or master number).
- Add the reduced values together and reduce the total to a single digit (or master number). That is your Expression number.
Worked Example: JOHN MICHAEL SMITH
JOHN: J(1) + O(6) + H(8) + N(5) = 20 → 2 + 0 = 2
MICHAEL: M(4) + I(9) + C(3) + H(8) + A(1) + E(5) + L(3) = 33 → master number, keep as 33
SMITH: S(1) + M(4) + I(9) + T(2) + H(8) = 24 → 2 + 4 = 6
Total: 2 + 33 + 6 = 41 → 4 + 1 = 5
Result: Expression Number 5
Note how MICHAEL reduced to master number 33. We preserved it rather than reducing to 6. The final total still reduced to 5.
Important: Use Your Birth Name
The Expression number must be calculated from the name on your birth certificate, not a married name, legal name change, nickname, or stage name. In numerology, the name given at birth carries a unique vibrational signature. Name changes later in life can add influence but do not replace the original Expression number.
Common Mistakes
- Using a married or changed name. Always use the birth certificate name.
- Skipping the middle name. Every name on the birth certificate must be included.
- Reducing master numbers prematurely. If a name totals 11, 22, or 33, preserve it before adding to the others.
- Using Chaldean instead of Pythagorean. The two systems assign different values to letters. Pythagorean is the standard in modern Western numerology.

What name do I use?

What about middle names?
