Understanding Pythagorean Numerology
Pythagorean numerology is the most widely practiced system in the Western world, tracing its roots to the Greek mathematician Pythagoras (570-495 BC). It operates on the principle that numbers carry vibrational qualities that can reveal information about personality, life purpose, and natural abilities.
The system uses a simple cipher to convert letters to numbers (A=1, B=2, ... I=9, J=1, K=2, and so on). By applying this cipher to your full birth name and reducing to single digits (or master numbers), different aspects of your personality emerge depending on which letters are included in the calculation.
The three core numbers (Life Path, Expression, and Soul Urge) each use different inputs and reveal different dimensions. The Life Path uses only your birth date. Expression uses all letters in your name. Soul Urge uses only the vowels. This separation creates a multi-layered profile from minimal data.

What is the difference between Life Path, Expression, and Soul Urge?
Life Path (from your birth date) represents your core life direction and personality. Expression (from all letters in your birth name) reveals your natural talents and abilities, what you are equipped to do. Soul Urge (from the vowels in your birth name) shows your inner motivation, what you truly desire at the deepest level. Together they form a three-dimensional picture of your numerological profile.
Should I use my birth name or current name?
Traditional Pythagorean numerology uses the name given at birth (as it appears on your birth certificate). This is believed to carry the original vibrational pattern you were given. If you have changed your name, the birth name still forms your foundational Expression and Soul Urge numbers.
Do I need my full birth name?
Yes. Enter your first and last name as given at birth, plus any middle names. Expression uses every letter and Soul Urge uses vowels, so missing names change the results. If you only want a birth-date calculation, use the separate Life Path calculator, which does not ask for your name.
How does numerology connect to astrology or BaZi?
Numerology, Western astrology, and Chinese BaZi are completely independent systems with different mathematical foundations, different cultural origins, and different calculation methods. That independence is exactly what makes cross-system convergence meaningful. When your Life Path number and your astrological chart point to the same trait, your snapshot flags it so you can judge it yourself.
Does Y count as a vowel?
Sometimes. Sagelon's calculator counts Y as a vowel when it is the only vowel sound in its part of the name, as in Kyle or Lynn. A Y next to another vowel, as in Maya or Yolanda, counts as a consonant. This matches the most widely used Pythagorean convention.
