What Are Tarot Birth Cards?
Unlike a tarot reading where cards are drawn at random, tarot birth cards are calculated, not drawn. They are determined by your birth date and remain the same for your entire life. Every person has a pair of two Major Arcana cards that describe the fundamental dynamic running through their personality and life experience. These cards are linked by numerological reduction: one is the "higher octave" and the other is the "lower octave" of the same archetypal energy.
How to Calculate
- Write out your full birth date in numerical form (month, day, four-digit year).
- Add all the digits together. For example, July 4, 1985 = 0 + 7 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5.
- If the sum is over 22, reduce it by adding the digits together again. Repeat until you have a number between 1 and 22.
- Find your pair. Your reduced number maps to a specific pair of Major Arcana cards.
The Pairing System
Each reduced number corresponds to two cards. A number from 1 to 9 pairs with the card 9 higher. For example, 7 pairs with 16 (7 + 9), giving you The Chariot and The Tower. A number from 10 to 21 pairs with the card its digits add up to, so 20 pairs with 2. Sagelon counts 22 as 4, which gives The Emperor and Death. Digits: 0 + 7 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 34
Reduce: 3 + 4 = 7
Card pair: 7 and 16 (7 + 9)
Result: The Chariot (VII) + The Tower (XVI)

Common Mistakes
- Reducing below 1. The minimum result is 1. If you somehow reach 0, you have over-reduced.
- Using a two-digit year. Always use the full four-digit year (1985, not 85).

The final result must be between 1 and 22 to map to a Major Arcana card. Most birth dates reduce to a number between 1 and 22 in one or two steps. Sagelon counts a result of 22 as 4.
Are some birth card pairs rarer?
Yes. The three results that need a total of exactly 19, 20, or 21 are the rarest. For birth dates from 1940 to 2009, each one covers under 2% of dates. The other nine pairs each cover about 9% to 11%, because totals of 23 or more reduce into them.
